Crown Tree Services are specialists in small and ornamental tree pruning and provide services throughout Dublin and North Co. Wicklow.
Small trees often need a more selective approach than larger tree work. Fruit trees, young trees and ornamental garden trees can be easily spoiled by heavy cutting, particularly where the aim is to retain form, improve structure and support long-term tree health.
This type of pruning is often carried out using secateurs, loppers and pruning saws rather than chainsaws. The work is slower and more selective, but it allows individual branches and overall form to be considered properly.
Careful Pruning for Small Trees
Small tree pruning is not simply a matter of cutting back growth. The timing, species, age, condition and previous pruning history of the tree all matter.
This work may be suitable for:
- Fruit trees
- Young garden trees
- Ornamental trees
- Apple and pear trees
- Cherry trees
- Small maples
- Trees close to paths, windows or boundaries
- Trees that have become congested, misshapen or too heavy in places
The aim is usually to improve structure, light, balance and amenity while avoiding unnecessary stress to the tree.
Secateurs and Pruning Saw Work
Where appropriate, smaller trees are pruned using secateurs and pruning saws. These tools allow for cleaner, more selective cuts and are often better suited to trees where detail matters.
Pruning tools are sterilised between jobs to reduce the risk of transferring disease or fungal material from one tree or garden to another. This is particularly relevant where work involves fruit trees or trees showing signs of poor health.
Fruit Tree Pruning
Fruit tree pruning requires a different approach from general reduction work. Pruning may be needed to improve light and air movement, remove crossing branches, manage height or encourage better fruiting wood.
The best pruning window depends on the species and the condition of the tree. Apple and pear trees are often pruned in winter, while stone fruit such as cherry and plum are usually better pruned in summer to reduce the risk of stressing the trees.
Where possible, it is best to plan this work in advance rather than waiting until the ideal window has almost passed.
Nesting Birds and Timing
Tree and hedge work must be approached carefully during nesting season. If active nests are present, pruning may need to be delayed.
This is one reason why planning ahead is useful. Where work is not urgent, it is often better to schedule pruning outside the most sensitive periods.
Booking Ahead
The most suitable pruning window is not always the easiest time to arrange work, particularly during busy periods. For that reason, customers who want careful small tree pruning, fruit tree pruning or seasonal pruning are encouraged to book well ahead whereever possible.

Climbing Smaller Trees
Some small to medium-sized trees are best pruned, as with larger trees, by an arborist from within the canopy rather than only from ladders, poles or the outer edge of the crown.
The reason is not simply access, but judgement and position. When the person pruning cannot get into a suitable working position, the cuts available to them are limited. That can lead to work being done where it is easiest to reach rather than where it is best for the tree.
Where the tree is suitable, Crown Tree Services can use a lightweight climbing approach for more delicate pruning work. Having a lightweight tree surgeon available can be useful on smaller trees where access, branch structure and the condition of the tree make heavier movement less appropriate. Working from within the canopy allows individual branches to be assessed in relation to the rest of the tree: where weight is being carried, how the branch contributes to shape, whether it is crossing or congesting other growth, and whether it should be shortened, thinned, retained or removed.
This can be particularly useful where the aim is to reduce weight, improve balance, manage size or retain the natural form of the tree. Poor access or poor positioning can result in heavy-handed cuts, lion-tailing or an unnatural outline, especially where branches are cut back from convenient points rather than suitable growth points.
Not every tree is suitable for climbing, and the method will depend on the species, structure, condition, surrounding area and whether the tree can safely accommodate climbing work. Where it is appropriate, however, this approach allows for a more considered result than simply cutting back what can be reached from the outside of the crown.
Small Tree Pruning and Removal
Crown Tree Services specialise in small to medium-sized tree pruning and removal, particularly where the work requires judgement rather than force.
A small tree is not automatically a simple tree. Poor structure, previous hard pruning, limited access, surrounding planting or proximity to buildings can all affect the best approach.
Where pruning is likely to give a good long-term result, it is usually preferable to retain and manage the tree. Where the tree is badly placed, structurally compromised or unlikely to respond well, removal may be the more sensible option.
Each tree is assessed separately, with regard to species, condition, setting and the intended future use of the garden.
